HSE Manager (Mining / Health and Safety / ISO / Expat / Health Strategy / Risk Assessment) – West Africa

Job Description:
A mining client has a vacancy for an HSE Manager for their operations in West Africa. The successful incumbent will report directly in to the GM: Support Service.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the site and leadership team to continuously improve H&S related aspects of business performance to ensure the organisation is capable of supporting sustainability and business growth
  • Implement and ensure compliance with group procedures, policies, standards and all legislative requirements
  • Promote health and safety through awareness, education and training to ensure employees are provided with appropriate H&S information
  • Develop workable H&S solutions to complex and unique issues in an environment characterised by conflicting priorities and financial and resource constraints. Determine impact and assess financial, social, environmental and commercial risk of alternative courses of action
  • Develop and implement health strategies and programmes aligned with government policy, which improve the health and well-being of workers, dependents and the local community
  • Promote effective management of work-related injuries and coordinate return to work programmes for employees with both work and non-work related injuries/illnesses whilst minimising severity and escalation of the injury
  • As a member of the Management Team, the position participates in strategic business planning and implementation of related H&S initiatives.
  • Participate and/or lead site internal audits and risk assessments
  • Develop a strategy to ensure the Company’s medical clinic provides the appropriate level of service and has the capability to achieve the required duty of care
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
  • BSc or postgraduate qualification in risk or safety related fields
  • A minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in a senior H&S leadership role
  • Experience in incident investigations (ICAM or similar)
  • Auditing experience and be accredited to a recognized auditing standard (ISO 9000, 14001, 18000)
  • Demonstrated history of improving H&S performance across a business in a challenging environment
  • Experience in emergency management
  • Medical qualifications and experience are advantageous
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to facilitate groups and present information
  • Ability to manage a culturally complex operation in a developing country environment
  • Exceptional report writing, data analysis skills and be fully proficient in Microsoft suite
