Senior Mine Planning Engineer (Technical Services / Short Term Planning / Medium and Long-term mine planning) – Southern Africa

Job Description:
Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent, the Senior Mine Planning Engineer will play a key part in the strategic direction of the Company to maximise returns from its available ore resources producing assets while advancing pre-development projects that offer potential to sustain and grow the business in the long term.  Responsible to manage the Mine Planning team in all day to day operations.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Manage and develop a team of mine planning engineers;
  • Translate broadly stated company objectives into detailed plans and schedules to ensure the mine can meet current and future production requirements;
  • Identify long term mining opportunities, develop strategies for realisation and align with medium term plans;
  • Coordinate the mine design and scheduling process through liaising and consultation with production managers and communicate effectively with technical, support and managerial teams;
  • Establish and maintain a mine planning system using suitable software, to integrate geological resource models, geotechnical models, survey data, optimised designs, and productivity trends to accurately and timeously plan mining sequences and development phases to meet required production targets;
  • Oversee operations to ensure adherence to short, medium and long-term plans;
  • Coordinate and review the design of sub-level open stoping blocks and extraction and backfilling sequences;
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance with OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001, and coordinate monthly safety inspections and task observations;
  • Contribute to budgeting and cost control processes;
  • Overview month end reporting processes for underground production statistics;

 
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
  • A recognised Bachelor of Engineering/ BSc Degree in Mining;
  • Minimum of 10 - 15 years’ experience in an underground mining environment with at least 4 years spent in mine planning and scheduling;
  • Experience in various underground mechanised mining methods is essential with at least 5 years’ experience with sub level open stoping methods;
  • Experience with backfill, ventilation and underground operational infrastructure requirements;
  • Solid experience in mine scheduling and developing a mining budget;
  • Strong planning and analytical skills;
  • Fluent in Deswik; and
  • Advanced (expert) skills in 3D mine design and scheduling software
