Job Description:
The role of Mining Manager – Open Cast is to manage open cast mining operations and in particular the Mining Contractor and associated contract.
  • Liaise and manage the mining contractor to meet coal quality and tonnage requirements in accordance with set governance protocols/principles
  •  Accountable for ensuring that the production and cost targets are met within the agreed financial budget and the operational standards.
  • Responsible for, approves and monitors the utilization of allocated funds to enable the attainment of departmental objectives
  • Responsible and accountable for managing and monitoring the Mining contractor and to ensure that the Contractor complies with all statutory requirements as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Sets and monitors performance standards against plans to ensure achievement of business objectives and appropriate mitigations for identified high risks.
  • Responsible for coordinating mining operations, mine planning, mine survey, mobile equipment maintenance and mine geology functions.
  • Manage mining operational risks and implement required risk management interventions
  • Develop short-, medium- and long-term mining production schedules in line with the company's strategic goals and objectives
  • Review and implementation of the most appropriate mining methods and equipment.
  • Accountable for ensuring that the safety, environmental and health targets are met within the agreed standards.
  • Manages key effectiveness areas of the Mining Contractor by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary.
  • Provides the framework for application of knowledge management principles to ensure effective knowledge capture, exchange and adaptation
  • Compliance with the Mine Mining Standards and the Botswana Mine, Quarries, Works and Machinery Regulations Act (MQWM). The incumbent will also carry the 9(4) legal appointment for Open Cast Mining operations as per the MQWM Act, Cap 44:02
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all key stakeholders and partners to ensure achievement of business objectives
  • Adheres to and promote safety health and environmental policies and procedures
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Mine Blasting License
  • Engineer Registration Board certification
  • Twelve (12) years post qualification experience with at least five (5) years in managerial level
  • Knowledge and / Training in FIDIC suite of contracts would be advantageous
  • Mining Contract and contract Management
  • Understanding of SHE Management Systems (ISO 14001 and 45001)
