Geotechnical Principal (Underground Mining / Mechanized / Gold / Expat) – West Africa

Job Description:
Provide safe, efficient and cost-effective operational control, technical excellence and leadership in support of the Department aligning to the business strategy and goals. Support the Departmental Manager to set and drive the Departmental strategy to align with the business needs as per the three-year budget and life of mine plan providing key technical support to minimise business risks. Drive behaviours, accountabilities, standards and frameworks to develop and maintain a business focused, high performance culture enabling continuous improvement. Facilitate cross departmental co-operation and collaboration to maximise business value; ensuring site and corporate strategic initiatives are translated into business goals. Responsibility for growing value, driving and building technical excellence across the discipline to support the National employee advancement.
 
Responsibilities:
  • The key outcomes for the Geotechnical Principal, aligning with the Manager as per the 3-year Budget Period and Strategic Plan to be delivered through inspired leadership focused on duty of care, operational discipline, value creation and continuous improvement are:
  • Accept accountability for performance of the Geotechnical section and ensure overall quality execution of tasks/services;
  • Driving operational discipline in alignment with business priorities and expectations through clearly defining what is expected, ensuring understanding of expectations, verifying that expectations are delivered on and leading by example
  • Cultivate positive relationships within and across business areas through effective communication and provide constructive feedback to direct reports/peers on a regular basis
  • Lead, coach, mentor and support employees and direct reports to understand and deliver on the plan
  • Instill a no-nonsense high-performance culture; drive Nationals advancement through succession planning and workplace opportunity
  • Ensure effective safety and health management across areas of accountability through high standards of housekeeping, effective critical controls and proactive elimination of hazards
  • Promptly investigate all injuries, actual or high potential incidents within your area of responsibility and ensure that corrective actions are completed on time and verified
  • Provide leadership in the identification and management of risk through compliance with risk management processes and practices
  • Elevates developing issues and concerns to the relevant mining managers for consultation and advice to reach agreed interventions and solutions; report back on the effectiveness
  • Ensure appropriate risk based geotechnical and hydrological processes and controls are in place to allow for the delivery of safe mining operation and capital projects to deliver outcomes consistent with the Company’s OH&S policies and procedures
  • Collaborates with the Mining Engineering, Exploration and Geology functions to define geotechnical models, ground support, slope stability and hydrological strategies; inform decisions around future mine designs
  • Works with Company Group Technical Services manager on corporate led initiatives and owns and leads site based geotechnical components of mining engineering and mine design studies
  • Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe and healthy working environment
  • Recognises the importance of Community relations, Environment and Security to the operations environment and manages area of responsibility in recognition of the need to maintain the Social Licence to Operate
  • Support the establishment effective budgeting, forecasting, cost management and analysis processes ensuring compliance with company financial and governance policies, procedures and reporting standards
  • Demonstrate the highest professional and ethical standards ensuring all actions are transparent and in accordance with company policy and values
  • Demonstrate technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and guiding the team to deliver agreed departmental and business goals to ensure the value of the business is maintained or improved
  • Demonstrates commitment to inclusivity in developing departmental plans and delivering on a shared Company strategy
 
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering
  • At least 10-15 years’ relevant experience in an underground, mechanized mining environment
  • Must have proven expat experience in Africa
  • Proven track record in operational mining projects essential, experience in operational readiness desired
  • Proven experience in geotechnical project planning, design and relevant software
  • Strong analytical and interpretation skills coupled with the ability to make decisions in a fast-changing environment
  • Full understanding of all discipline relevant legislation; and Contractor management skills
