Job Description:
Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent, the Chief Surveyor is responsible for delivering all survey requirements to the underground mining operations and surface operations where required, ensuring production survey plans are updated and executed according to short and medium-term production planning requests to achieve the mine’s short-term targets.
  • Manage and develop a team of mine surveyors;
  • Coordinate all survey activities within the mine operation;
  • Co-ordinate and communicate effectively with other site technical, operational, support, and managerial teams;
  • Establish surveying procedures and manage survey systems and data to ensure mine production requirements are delivered to agreed standards and timelines;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of statutory survey requirements, including for local, regional, and national governmental bodies. Plan for the preparation and submission of required survey plans accordingly so that required submission deadlines are met and maintained;
  • Responsible for continuously updating surface and underground mining plans to meet statutory requirements;
  • Compiling month end production figures for purposes of reconciliation;
  • Manage surface survey infrastructure and equipment;
  • Complete all surface related survey requirements;
  • Manage and coordinate all underground survey requirements;
  • Manage systems for the lay out and maintenance of survey reference marks both on the surface and underground, for the control of drilling, development, services and production activities;
  • Monitor mine surveying systems and performance measures and formulate alternatives and improvements to systems and methods; 
  • Manage the survey requirements for declines, roadways, stopes, buildings, stockpiles waste dumps and all related infrastructure both on surface and underground; 
  • Adhere to and improve procedures and practices for survey data collection;
  • Assume accountability of all survey measurements in all departments;
  • Ensure survey data is compiled into correct formats and grid reference systems;
  • Conduct spot checks and regular audits to ensure data accuracy;
  • Ensure data is appropriately and safely stored in data bases and filing systems;
  • Conduct monthly reconciliation of all ore waste and stockpile movements;
  • Oversee and review the measuring and reporting of underground development and mining activities for payment to contractors and internal reporting;
  • Provide as-built surveys for all excavations and infrastructure;
  • Manage and coordinate surveyors and their assistants for all survey work and ensure all work is done in a safe manner and complies with company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with standards stipulated within the Botswana Mines, Quarries, works and machinery Act
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mine Surveying or equivalent; 
  • 15+ years mine surveying experience, with experience in senior survey roles in underground mine surveying; 
  • Surface survey experience essential including the surveying of services and stockpile surveying;
  • At least 5 years’ experience with fully mechanised sub level open stopping essential, experience with backfilling operations desirable;
  • Experience with managing underground mining contractors and producing payment related quantity survey reports;
  • Experience with producing plans and sections for various governmental stakeholders;
  • Survey project experience is desirable, i.e. decline re-traverses;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage surveyor groups and liaising with stakeholders; and
  • Advanced skills in the use of mine survey software
