An opportunity for a Regional Operations Manager, based in Durban, has become available. The successful candidate will effectively manage all regional operations and support functions for South Africa. His/her responsibilities will include driving the achievement of regional strategic and operational targets relating to contract management and expansion, business processes, profitability, resource management, compliance and client relationship management.

  • Strategic and Technical Contribution
    • Within the context of the Group strategy, coordinate the formulation and the implementation of a regional strategy, based on a 1 to 3-year view of requirements.
    • Ensure that assigned and agreed targets are operationalised and achieved through cascaded responsibilities assigned to the regional and camp management teams.
    • Ensure that all business activities are performed in a robust control and compliance environment.
    • Drive the implementation and standardization of best practice, systems and processes to enable continued improvement that meets the strategic and operational requirements of the business, especially in times of change.
    • Ensure that up-to-date market information regarding South Africa and the potential client base is communicated to guide decision-making and marketing and sales activities.
  • Statutory Compliance and Stakeholder Engagement
    • Ensure compliance with all country-specific laws and governance requirements ensuring strict compliance with commercial and labour legislation and any other statutory requirements.
    • Drive the regular and constructive engagement by the appropriate member of the management team with governmental and community stakeholders to ensure business sustainability and growth.
    • Keep abreast of corporate responsibility expectations in-country and coordinate the design and implementation of responding interventions and programmes.
  • Operations Management
    • Drive regional operational productivity through agreed targets and resource utilisation efficiencies.
    • Review weekly reports on actual operational targets versus budget and work with the team to address the areas of non-conformance or concern, proactively and timeously.
    • Drive Company branding and Operations appearance and image through excellent service delivery and frontline customer, supplier and community interaction.
    • Review the progress of all contracts and determine the viability of existing and new contracts.
    • Lead the establishment and maintenance of in-country HSE and organizational and individual performance management systems.
  • Business Planning and New Business Development
    • Have insight into future opportunities in the Northern Cape in order to maintain the Business’s long-term sustainability.
    • In conjunction with the Marketing and Sales team, develop and maintain a detailed country profile of potential clients (who, what, where) and competitors, including their current presence in the country and current facilities contracts.
    • Constantly consider broadening and deepening the service offering to clients.
    • Coordinate and drive expanded sales efforts with existing clients.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key in-country leaders within the region to inform future planning and focus.
  • Financial and Pricing Management
  • Drive the formulation and monitor the achievement of base and stretch financial goals for the region.
  • Have input in and control the regional budget.
  • Understand key drivers of profit and loss and actively support the achievement of financial targets including driving profitable services at a client level, maximising profitability and identifying further business opportunities.
  • Identify business risks to achieving financial targets within the regional Business.
  • Promote and drive the implementation of effective systems to manage cost of sales across the regional Business.
  • Participate in setting new contract pricing to extract maximum value for new clients.
  • Track the company brand and competitive price across existing and potential clients.
  • Recommend pricing corrections and adjustments where required to sustain new business.
  • Asset Management
    • Drive sustainable asset care through planned maintenance and management of capital expenditure.
    • Implement, develop and review outputs of the regional asset management programme.
  • Contract Review
    • Review all regional contracts to ensure that they are legally sound, aligned with the Business strategy and that all legal implications have been considered.
    • Ensure records of all contracts are submitted to the Legal and Risk Executive and a copy is retained in-country.
    • Lead a quarterly performance and compliance audit against the contract terms for each project.
  • Site Mobilisation
    • Plan and lead the mobilisation of all new regional contracts ensuring effective operations from the relevant start date and the satisfaction of client expectations and contractual requirements.
  • Client Relationship Management
    • Ensure that new clients have up-to-date knowledge of companies’ products and services and market trends.
    • Drive the awareness and understanding of clients’ budgets, goals, strategies, needs and the impact on company.
    • Drive the nature and extent of communications with new clients.
    • Conduct formal meetings with key client representatives on a monthly basis and drive operational initiatives coming out of the sessions.
    • Lead a regional programme to assess client perceptions on a bi-annual basis.
  • Staff Management
    • Lead and develop staff within the context of the country-specific labour relations requirements, including the strict management of conduct within the context of the law and Company policy.
    • Monitor staff performance and provide regular feedback.
    • Manage staff activities, ensuring service levels are met and protocols are adhered to.
    • Coach and support staff where necessary to achieve objectives.
    • Manage staff leave and general time management issues in line with organisational deliverables and standards.
    • Manage and deliver on succession plans to enable the development of a future generation of leaders and specialists and ensure optimal turnover and retention levels are maintained.
    • Conduct regular performance appraisals with subordinates.
    • Establish sound staff communication structures and systems.
    • Develop and manage high performance multidisciplinary teams in order to solve problems.
    • Conduct regular meetings and ensure that records are kept and shared across the team and that action plans agreed to within team meetings are delivered upon.
  • Effective Teamwork and Self-Management
    • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and activities and demonstrate effective self-management in terms of planning and prioritising, and self-development.
    • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of work are consistently and accurately maintained.
    • Inform relevant parties in the event of tasks or deadlines not met, the potential risks thereof and provide appropriate resolution.
    • Manage colleagues and employees’ expectations and communicate appropriately.
    • Demonstrate willingness to help others.
  • Commercial Degree;
  • Minimum 7 - 10 years’ operations experience at least 3 years should be senior management level;
  • Experience with commercial and contract law;
  • Broad knowledge of business operations and systems;
  • An understanding of multiple key performance indicators, inter-relationship and bottom line sensitivity;
  • Company economics;
  • Knowledge of sales and marketing principles and methodologies;
  • Country-specific socio-economic and political factors;
  • Verbal and written communication;
  • Computer literate;
