Job Description:
Ensure the Company’s operations are in full compliance with the environmental requirements of Guinean Legislation, Company procedures, International Standards and best practices, such as World Bank/IFC Performance Standards. The project is going through the construction phase so it is essential that the successful incumbent has construction mining experience. This position reports directly in to the Environment and Social Manager.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of functional policies, systems, processes, procedures and control covering all areas of the Environment so that all relevant procedural/legislative requirements are fulfilled while delivering a quality, cost-effective service in a consistent manner
  • Prepare and recommend annual budget of the Environment
  • Supervises work of contractors and consultants (i.e., Fauna/Flora, Chimpanzee specialists, Mangrove rehabilitation, etc.)
  • Supervision of Fieldwork/monitoring team (Environmental Technicians)
  • Prepare TOR and SOW for specific intervention and conduct bid evaluations
  • Develop, improve and implement the Environment policy, procedures, plan and systems. Communicate these to employees and contractors and ensure that they are understood and complied with
  • Strive to eliminate environment incidents in the field and workplace by proactively managing
  • Responsible for undertaking biodiversity surveys/ assessments and establishing an Ecological Monitoring Programme
  • Implement a wildlife Conservation strategy and programmes (Wild Species & Forests, Grasslands, etc.) and particularly regarding chimpanzee and critical habitats issues
  • Supervising and ensuring the preparation of periodic environmental and biodiversity performance reports
  • Coordinate and administer the implementation of Clearing Permit process
  • Implement offset strategies/programmes, particularly with regard to chimpanzees, other threatened species and critical habitats
  • Work with individual partners to identify and develop opportunities and partnerships for contributions to BMP targets, including local authorities, statutory bodies, neighbouring companies, civil society, local groups, voluntary organisations, agencies and industry
  • Collaborate with the social team for eco-system service issues
  • Participate in the Project management meetings to provide insights from Environment point of view
  • Engage with consultants, experts and stakeholders
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
  • Master’s Degree of environmental science, Ecology, earth science, water resources, fauna & flora, biodiversity
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience on large mining projects
  • Significant mining industry experience in remote tropical locations and preferably previous experience in working in Guinea or a country in Africa with similar culture, working environment and challenges
  • Strong experience in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and Environmental Monitoring
  • Must be fluent in French and English
  • Driving license mandatory and experience in driving on the ground
  • Experience with IFC performance standards, project financing, ISO 14001 and Systems Auditing
  • Coordinate and administer the implementation of Clearing Permit process during the construction phase
